2.45 Title Sequences

My third production essay, to accompany
workshops I am doing as part of module
TID1422 Process and Production 2. This, is
about title sequences, exploring openings and
intros. Preludes.

Danny Yount is an American designer,
most well known for his contemporary
title sequences
His showreels are on his website, below
http://www.dannyyount.com/

MAIN TITLES REEL from Danny Yount on Vimeo.
This is one of Danny Yount’s most famous
title sequences, now a seminal part of
design histories, for Seven. This shows a
fragmented, disjointed opening of cuts,
graphics and photography to replace,
and respect, presenting ideas of disjointed
realities from this film

Seven : Main Titles from Prologue Films on Vimeo.

Six Feet Under Main Title from DIGITAL KITCHEN on Vimeo.
Six Feet Under, designed also by Danny Yount.
An American TV series set in a funeral
parlour, this opening shows photography,
beautiful, pared down visuals and an
atmosphere, a slick, and understated,
beautiful response to ideas around dying and
death.

Catch Me If You Can / Opening title from Kuntzel + Deygas on Vimeo.
Catch Me if You Can, by artist duo Kuntzel +
Deygas. This is produced most probably in
After Effects, I love characters, how each
moves and reappears, and a sense of strong
graphic style. This links to older pieces
of work including:

PSYCHO (1960) – Saul Bass Title Sequence from California Film Institute on Vimeo.
Saul Bass, master of title sequences, first
developing titles as art forms, in collaboration
with Alfred Hitchcock. His famous
opening to Hitchcock’s Psycho represents
themes in this film, fragmented, doubles,
cit, and split identities, all using simple
text forms.

What Barry Says from North Boy South on Vimeo.
What Barry Says, this is a short film by
Simon Robson of Knife Party. Visually striking,
this work started a trend of self-authored,
political statements in motion graphics.
Produced in 2004.

Counterpart main titles from Filipe Carvalho on Vimeo.
Work by Filipe Carvalho, also, with Yount
is part of a now classic group of motion
graphics artists and designers working on
title sequence designs in New York. This
was produced at Imaginary Forces, set up
by Kyle Cooper. Carvalho’s vimeo site is here:
https://vimeo.com/filipecarvalho

and his website here, showing his beautiful
style frames and pre-production works:

FITC Tokyo 2015 Titles from FITC on Vimeo.
FITC Tokyo 2015 Titles by Ash Thorp. Technically
brilliant and visually striking, this is one of
my favourite pieces of recent motion graphics,
with a beautiful tone, texture and feel.

Rugby League Title Sequence from Sara Nesteruk on Vimeo.
And finally, some of my work. I created this
at BBC Sport in 2013. My brief was to represent
and reflect, histories of Rugby League, and
its coverage on BBC, with huge archives of
materials dating back to 1930’s, and first
competitions for Challenge Cup. This was
made for Challenge Cup coverage and
re-versioned for Rugby League competitions,
each section represents a different period in
history, and all VT, footage and edits
were created by Mark Woodward.

While Darwin Sleeps (Full) - Paul Bush from Film Club Productions on Vimeo.
This was my reference for my Rugby League
work, a brilliant film by animator Paul
Bush, using archive objects to create motion.
